If you’re starting a remodel on your home and thinking “where do I even begin?” I completely
understand! It can be so overwhelming to start to think about what you want the end product
of your remodel to look like, where to start, how to select materials, how to get the correct
layout, and on and on! Here are my top 3 tips for you as you start your remodel project:
1. Utilize Pinterest or Houzz. Start an inspiration board with your project name and just
start to scroll. Save any photo that you like, even if you don’t love everything in the
photo you can add notes to each photo to start narrowing down. When you look at the
inspiration board you may start to notice patterns or repeating elements that you are
drawn to or maybe even items you don’t like, and you can eliminate. This is a great first
step that I do with every one of my clients to understand their style, aesthetic, color
preferences, textures, and patterns they love. There is so much power in visuals
especially if you are trying to explain your vision to others!
2. Go to local showrooms and pickup samples of everything you like and take them home.
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is selecting materials in a showroom. The
fluorescent lighting in a showroom is always going to be different from the lighting in
your home. It is so much easier to feel good about the material selections you’ve made
when you can bring them home, lay them out and live with them for a couple days
before committing.
3. Do your research! On everything! Research the differences between cabinet materials,
countertop stones, tile, flooring, etc. I love reading the reviews of products too, there is
no better person to tell you if the product you are ordering is good than someone who
has already ordered and installed it. Research the companies who are installing the
materials and get multiple quotes to price compare. It can be time consuming to go
through each product, trade, quote but it will be well worth it for a timeless and quality
design.
